Pink Mountaintopsca

23:25 | The clear-cut evidence that Stephen McBean truly exceeds his role as killer-riff producing machine in Black Mountain could be heard on Pink Mountaintops' 2009 release Outside Love. Pink Mountaintops, originally his solo project, shows us McBean's gentler side, drenching straightforward songs in a steamy tub of 90s reminiscent UK shoegaze mixed with a dash of American psychedelica. On Outside Love, their third and latest Jagjaguwar release, McBean brought in his cast of usual suspects, including all Black Mountain protagonists as well as Sophie Trudeau (Godspeed You! Black Emperor/A Silver Mt. Zion), Jesse Sykes (of The Sweet Hereafter) and Josh Stevenson (Jackie O Motherfucker). Now, in 2011, McBean deems it's about time to bring Pink Mountaintops back over to Europe. And since the other Black Mountain members don't like the idea of waiting around for his return, you can prepare yourself for a nice collection of familiar faces, moves and instruments.

Siskiyouca

22:35 - 23:20 | It is difficult to say exactly how long it took Siskiyou to record their debut, self-titled album. It was during downtime from the ambitious tour schedule of his former band, Great Lake Swimmers that Colin Huebert began unofficially recording 'ideas' at his home in Vancouver, British Columbia. It wasn't until his final departure from said band in the summer of 2008 that Huebert found the time and energy necessary to begin crafting Siskiyou's forthcoming album.

Never one to unconsciously adhere to rules and standards, Colin approached recording somewhat differently than others. In an attempt to remove 'the brain' from the song-writing process, the core of many songs were recorded, using whatever means available, often within ten minutes of their conception. Without any idea of a final product, these rudimentary recordings were shared with former band mate, Erik Arnesen, and together they meticulously built strange and lush arrangements to surround these charmed moments. Employing various locations (beaches, stairwells, bathrooms, etc.) throughout the Vancouver area, Siskiyou proceeded to balance the energy of an epiphany with a modest, methodical attention to detail. This tension, apparent throughout Siskiyou's self-titled debut full length has been described as perfectly capturing the lush, yet often-chilly landscape of the Pacific Northwest.

With the help of two other multi-instrumentalists from Vancouver, Siskiyou delivered a series of stellar debut live performances as a four-piece to sold-out rooms in Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal in autumn 2010, then embarked on a month-long tour of Europe.

The band has already finished the bulk of recording for its sophomore album, during sessions in a century-old community hall located in rural British Columbia.

Califoneusa

21:45 - 22:30 | In an underground music landscape where lone MP3s propel bands to momentary internet stardom, bands are here today and gone tomorrow. Califone is a band that defies this blueprint. Their albums are full of layers and textures, offering endless depth, entire universes to lose yourself in – and beyond the thick spectrum of sound, they do something even more important: They write great songs. Califone is a band that will stand the test of time.

Califone's music has often been described as cinematic, and the band has been known to contribute live improvised soundtracks to silent films. Many of these performances have been released on Califone albums Deceleration One and Deceleration Two. Primary songwriter and vocalist Tim Rutili's artistic endeavors stretch beyond music, and include the creation of surreal short documentaries, music videos and experimental films.

She Keeps Beesusa

21:00 - 21:40 | She Keeps Bees. She Keeps Bees. She Keeps Bees. She. Keeps. Bees? Putting their name aside (and perhaps their name is to blame on their location: Brooklyn) She Keeps Bees are one of the keepers (pun intended) from the BK bunch. Having formed in 2006, She of the Bee-keeping would be (on voice and guitar) Jessica Larribee, with her friend/producer/boyfriend Andy LaPlant on drums. The band themselves liken themselves to a bit of Howlin' Wolf, PJ Harvey and Millie Johnson, but the very nature of SKB (a boy/girl duo) will automatically cast people's minds to the hallowed White Stripes and the early Kills. You can hear the connection in the sparse, dirty tunes that are more than subconsciously driven by the energy and the tension between Jessica and Andy (or Jamie/Allison, Jack/Meg). They barely emerged from the bedroom long enough to release their first mini-LP, 2006's Minisink Hotel (available as a bonus disk with the Rough Trade edition), which was actually recorded in a bedroom. Their four-track EP released earlier in the year, Revival, set the stall for their raw, DIY ethos and Nests continues their foray into sinister, powerfully raw blues rock.

At just under 27 minutes, Nests is nothing if not straight to the point. Its most obvious strongpoint is Jessica's voice. She has amazing control over her vocals, able to simultaneously be fiery and reserved, seductive and vaguely crude – her voice is what breathlessly invites you into their dingy world. She ably plays a lot of similar vocal roles, different enough but all vaguely connected, from the punishing Fiona-Apple-esque siren on 'My Last Nerve' to the faux-romantic, drizzly-sweet on the outside, bitter on the inside ballad of a woman scorned on 'Get Gone', right through to the sparse, gospel ringleader of 'Bones are Tired'. She plays 'em all with ease befitting someone with rather more than an album and a bit to their name.

'Focus' begins with a brooding riff that we've all heard before, but if it doesn't command your attention, well, I can't help you because I fell for this foreboding jam hook, line, and sinker. 'Gimme' is the most blatantly sexual song on the album, Jessica at her fiercest, sultry and intriguing as she growls, "Gimme gimme gimme gimme / Give it to me daddy". Annoying as some couple-bands can be, She Keeps Bees play it fairly cool – letting their chemistry and the inherent intimacy speak through the songs. 'Wear Red' is the most old time-y jam, kind of a campfire song – little bit psychy, lot of blues. It would be good for any kind of camping trip, complete with whiskey, to some Joshua Tree-style psychedelic desert. 'Ribbon' is as simple as it gets on this album, but the no frills approach mixed with the gospel-garage vocals is gold. It's the perfect summation of She Keeps Bees: intricate without being unclear, stark without being uninteresting, and ultimately, a band to keep around.

Teme Tan

20:25 | As a child, Tanguy grew up playing in the "Matiti", the weeds in the back of his yard in Kinshasa. Although his mother warned him and his brothers about snakes and other dangers present there, he nevertheless spent most of his time creating imaginary stories among the fireflies and spiders. As his family left Zaïre, Tanguy took all its landscapes, sounds, flavours and rhythms along with the suitcases. Memories that would later inspire him. After travelling in Andalusia, Japan and Guatemala it was in the south-woody part of Belgium that Teme Tan shaped its sound. His first album is mixing afro, latin and indie music with great cohesion. A sunny record that will warm you up this winter.

The Brothers Deerebe

20:00 - 20:20 | The Brothers Deere Judging from The Brothers' work one could conclude that Piet (De Pessemier), after years of struggling he finally found his own E Street Band; a band whose music pulls, pushes, drags and splutters but never breaks down. Piet clearly has an affinity with tractors.
A natural musician, Piet De Pessemier, Started his career in 1999 as the lead singer of the band; Krakow. The release of three albums (Home, As the heart is, Far-Away look) and opening for bands such as; Joan As Policewoman, Woven Hand and Great Lake Swimmers didn't quench his musical thirst.
In 2009 he decided to start a new band that emphasised more on Country and 'Old School' influences. Back to basics, a lot of respect for the older generation and influenced by Neil Young, Band Of Horses, Wilco, The Band, Bob Dylan, Pink Floyd....
After only a short while Piet found (thanks to Stijn Persoons), some other musicians that best complemented his vision. To scramble everything into something fresh and new he got Gert Stinckens to lift up the sound with his tell-tale soundscapes and freaky solos. While keeping with up the values of the old masters, 'The Brothers' try to think more and more outside the box. Their capricious and cocky character sometimes makes them stand out from a host of other bands. Micha Volders (The Vermin Twins) produced their untitled debut EP.

Line-up:  Piet De Pessemier (Krakow, Mad About Mountains) Vocals-guitar Stijn Persoons (Kosjer D, Krakow, The Bottle comets) Drums Tom Thijs (The Bottle comets) Bass Gert Stinckens (Benny Zen, Tour) Guitar Davy Jansen (The Bottle comets) Backing vocals-guitar
